West Nile detected in Middleboro mosquito population

Avoiding mosquito activity can keep people safe from West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
West Niles virus has been detected in a mosquito population in Middleboro, state health officials report.
The positive results were detected Aug. 18, according to the state.
Middleboro and Lakeville have been placed in moderate risk for the virus.
Middleboro is also listed at moderate risk for eastern equine encephalitis, also known as EEE. Lakeville is at low risk, according to state information.
Both illnesses are transmitted by mosquito bites.
The state offers the following suggestions for avoiding mosquito activity:
Use an EPA-registered insect repellent when spending time outdoors.
Wear long sleeves and long pants, when possible, especially during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
Remove or drain standing water around your home and workplace.
Make sure window and door screens are in good condition.
Take extra precautions when spending time near wooded or wetland areas.
