School Committee vacancy will remain until 2027 election

MIDDLEBORO --- The Middleboro School Committee will operate with one less member until next April’s town elections.
Citing family reasons, Shannon Bream has officially resigned from the committee. This drops the membership numbers from seven members to six.
The committee unanimously agreed at their Aug. 27 meeting to keep the seat vacant. They also had the option of working with the select board to appoint a new member to serve until the 2027 election.
“The people should decide,’’ committee member Christopher Benson said.
Voters at the October 2025 Special Town Meeting agreed to expand the board from six to seven members to avoid tie votes and to reflect what has been described as a significant workload.
Finance Committee Chair Robert Sullivan, a former Middleboro superintendent of schools, asked the committee to keep the workload in mind when making the decision.
The district is also losing its Director of Business and Finance.
Michael Perrone is leaving the position, Interim Superintendent of Schools David Thomson announced.
Perrone also served as interim superintendent after the departure of previous superintendent Carolyn Lyons and prior to Thomson being selected as interim superintendent through this school year.
“It’s a loss for us,’’ School Committee Chair Susan Pennini said of Perrone’s departure. “He did yeoman’s work covering two positions during a difficult time.’’
The committee is considering next steps regarding the position, she said.
