MIDDLEBORO -- A Middleboro man has been charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition after 15 firearms stolen from a Middleboro residence were recovered.
An investigation into the stolen firearms led law enforcement to James Delano, a convicted felon, Middleboro Police said. The firearms were taken in a break-in at a Middleboro residence on July 25, police said.
Following the burglary, Middleboro Police detectives began an investigation, working closely with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and other law enforcement agencies.
Delano was identified through a combination of surveillance, digital forensics, cell site location data, automated license plate readers, privately owned cameras, interviews, and other investigative techniques, police said.
On July 28, Middleboro detectives, with assistance from agents and task force officers assigned to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bridgewater Field Office, executed a state search warrant at Delano’s Middleboro home.
During the search, police said, investigators seized ammunition and a cell phone belonging to Delano.
Information developed during the investigation led investigators to a residence belonging to members of Delano’s family in Cold Brook, N.Y.
On Aug, 13, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents from the Bridgewater and Syracuse, N.Y. field offices executed a federal search warrant at the Cold Brook residence. During the search, agents located and recovered five of the firearms stolen during the Middleboro burglary.
They also located multiple rounds of ammunition that had been buried in a wooded area near the residence.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents then conducted more interviews in the Cold Brook area. This led to the recovery of an additional ten stolen firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition.
As a result of the investigation, police said, the 15 firearms stolen during the July 25 burglary have now been recovered.
Middleboro Police thanked the investigative efforts of the Middleboro Police Detective Division, whose work following the initial burglary was described as instrumental in identifying the suspect, developing investigative leads, and assisting in the recovery of the 15 stolen firearms.
The Department also thanked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bridgewater and Syracuse field offices and United States Attorney's Office of Massachusetts.
