Middleboro Schools finished last financial year with surplus
MIDDLEBORO – In his final report as Middleboro Public Schools’ director of business and finance, Michael Perrone gave the Middleboro School Committee a parting gift.
Perrone told the committee that the district closed out the 2026 financial year with a surplus of over $70,000. That money was returned to the town following the close out, he said.
He also said that the district used “almost $500,000” in leftover funds to offset the costs of out-of-district special education student placements. “This does take a lot of pressure off the current-year budget,” Perrone said.
In a slideshow presented to the committee, Perrone said the financial year 2027 budget “at this time looks to be in good shape.”
He said he is less positive about the budget for financial year 2028, which starts on July 1, 2027, although he noted that the rest of the town is in a similar position.
“This is incredibly good news,” said School Committee Chair Susan Pennini. She said she was glad the district didn’t enter a deficit, which she said some people were concerned about.
Perrone told the school committee to continue to monitor the transportation budget, which he said is “one of the only concerns I have.” He said that rising transportation costs for special education students could pose a problem in the future.
Perrone is leaving Middleboro for a position at Old Rochester Regional School District. He served as interim superintendent before David Thomson took that role.
