With a significant storm predicted for this weekend, local agencies are advising residents to be prepared.
This is expected to be a long-duration system with potentially substantial wind and rain. The long duration of the winds coupled with heavy rain and fully leafed trees may exacerbate the risk for tree damage and power outages, the Lakeville Fire Department notes.
Middleboro Gas and Electric Department offers the following tips:
Build or check an emergency kit. Make sure it includes flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, first-aid supplies, necessary medications, important documents, water and other essential items.
Charge devices. Fully charge cellphones, portable chargers and other electronic devices before the storm.
Secure outdoor items. Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, decorations and other objects that could be blown around by strong winds.
Review your emergency plan. Create or review your family emergency plan, especially if you live in an area prone to flooding. Be prepared in the event you lose electricity.
Stay informed. Monitor local weather forecasts and emergency alerts before and during the storm. Conditions can change quickly.
Stay away from downed trees, power lines and utility wires. Always assume a downed wire is live and keep a safe distance.

During the storm, updates will be posted on the MGED website and on their social media channels as information becomes available.
The department will not be providing estimated restoration times. Restoration times can change as crews assess damage, weather conditions evolve and additional issues are identified.
The Town of Lakeville will have an on-demand storm shelter available at the Center For Active Living should the need arise this weekend.
The shelter will be opened on an as-needed basis upon request from residents. To request access, call the fire department at 508-947-4121 and the facility will be made available.
The Lakeville Fire Department adds the following advice:
Keep pets indoors
Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone else that may need assistance
In the event that you lose power:
Use safe light sources and avoid candles.
Do not use generators inside your homes, garage, or any other enclosed area.
Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home and away from any doors, windows, or vents.
Always assume that any downed power line is live.
Have a backup plan in place if you rely on any medical equipment that requires electricity.
Should flooding occur, do not attempt to drive through flooded roads or around barricades. Non-emergency power outages can be reported to your power company. For any emergencies, call 911.
