Rescuers work their Magic to help fallen horse
LAKEVILLE -- A 1,000-pound horse named Magic is back on his feet, thanks to rescue efforts from the Lakeville Fire Department and Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team.
Lakeville Fire received a call about a downed horse at Beland Stables at about 7 p.m. May 18, Fire Chief Michael O’Brien said.
Responding firefighters found a horse unable to get to its feet in a fenced field, the chief said.
Dr. Kendyl Foristall from Highland Hill Veterinary Service in Middleboro was called to the scene, and the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team was also brought in.
The rescue team frequently responds to large animal rescue incidents, O’Brien said, and is equipped with specialized equipment designed to safely conduct these incidents.
Under the direction of Dr. Foristall, Lakeville firefighters, and bystanders successfully assisted Magic back to a standing position.
Initially, Magic was a bit unsteady, O’Brien reported, but he quickly recovered enough to meet and greet many of his rescuers.
The Lakeville Fire Department is no stranger to Beland Stables.
They have partnered before to deliver large animal rescue training programs in Lakeville that have been attended by firefighters and rescue teams throughout the state., the chief said.
“The department is incredibly proud to see this training and collaboration put into action to safely rescue Magic,’’ O’Brien said.
He thanked everyone involved for their “teamwork, professionalism, and compassion’’ during the incident.
