Lakeville Council on Aging in bloom with June activities
The Lakeville Council on Aging, located on Dear Crossing, offers the following special events in June, in addition to regular programming and services. Please call 508-947-7224 for more information.
Self Defense Classes with Elijah: Mondays at 1:00 p.m. starting June 8 Grand Master and 9th Degree Black Belt Elijah Swain of Tai Jing Academy presents “One Step to Safety,” a four-part program designed to help older adults protect themselves. The first session starts Monday, June 8 at 1 p.m. Additional classes are on July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14 and cover such topics as awareness, avoidance and escape, and defense against punches, grabs and weapon attacks. Sign-ups for classes are required and start the first day of each month by calling 508-947-7224.
Classes are $5 per person payable the day of class.
Happy Mail Card Making with Lee: Tuesday, June 9 at 10 a.m.
Make at least six handmade cards to take home to send “Happy Mail” out to friends and loved ones. Seating is limited and registration is required. $10 per person is due at the time of sign-up at the COA and covers all materials and instruction.
Chair Massage: Tuesdays, June 16 and July 7 at 10 a.m.
The Lakeville COA will host Chair Massage on Tuesday, June 16 and July 7 at 10 a.m. Participants can reduce stress, improve circulation and promote relaxation with a gentle massage to the neck, shoulders and back, all while sitting in special chairs. Space is limited and advance registration is required. The cost is $5 due at the time of sign-up.
Matinee Movies at the COA
Enjoy a movie with friends. Admission is $2 and
includes light refreshments. Coming soon: “The Unbreakable Boy” (PG) on Tuesday, June 9 at 1 p.m.; “Solo Mio” (PG) on Tuesday, June 16 at 1 p.m. and “A Complete Unknown (R),” on Monday, June 22 at 1 p.m. Call 508-947-7224 to sign up for one or all showings.
Arts & Crafts with Amy: Wednesday, June 17 at 10 a.m.
Using natural seashells and decoupage or paint, students will create a “Coastal Catch-all” for holding trinkets, jewelry or even to transform into an ornament or pendant. $20 per person, due the day of class, covers all supplies and instruction. Call 508-947-7224 to reserve a seat.
July 4th Celebration at the Lakeville COA: Tuesday, June 30 at noon.
Celebrate Independence Day and the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Lunch at the Lakeville COA will be provided by Old Colony Elder Services/Trio and include backyard barbecue favorites like cheeseburgers, hotdogs, salads, watermelon and dessert. Entertainment will be provided by Sgt. Dan Clark, “The Singing Trooper” at 1 p.m. This is a free event, open to Lakeville’s older adults, as well as the COA’s extended community of out-of-town regular volunteers. Sign-ups are limited and required beginning June 1 by calling 508-947-7224.
