Good Scouts: Girls place flags on veterans graves
New flags were placed on the graves of about 100 veterans, thanks to the efforts of Girl Scouts from Lakeville and Freetown and their families.
FREETOWN -- This act of service took place at White Cemetery in Freetown.
Moving stone to stone in small groups, each scout read the veteran’s name aloud, offered a thank you for their service, and then carefully placed a new flag.
Along the way, they learned about flag etiquette and the meaning behind Memorial Day, learning lessons in respect, gratitude, and citizenship.
To close the evening, every scout received a special patch honoring their service and enjoyed a cold treat with friends.
“ Our Girl Scouts showed incredible respect as they honored 100 veterans,’’ said Michelle Hecht, Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Board Member and Service Unit Leader. “This is what the Girl Scouts mission looks like in action, building girls of confidence, courage, and character who make the world a better place.”
