MIDDLEBOROUGH - FRANCIS “FRANK” JOSEPH ROONEY, age 86, of Middleborough, passed away peacefully at his home with his family, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
Frank was born on May 16, 1940, in Boston, MA, to the late Lawrence and Mary E. (Donahue) Rooney. He grew up in Boston and graduated from Gate of Heaven High School in South Boston. After high school, he joined the Army and retired with 21 years of service. During his military career, he belonged to the 421st Artillery Group (U.S. Army Reserve) and the 26th Yankee Infantry Division Band (MA National Guard).
After completing courses at Blake Computing Institute and Bridgewater State College, Frank began his career in computers. He worked as a Data Processing Manager, Senior Programmer/Analyst, and IT Group Manager for companies such as Quincy Market Cold Storage, AT&T Capital, Americold Corporation, and The First Years.
Frank was deeply involved in many local organizations and social groups. He was a respected member of the Middleboro BPO Elks, where he held many offices and titles, including Past Exalted Ruler and Honorary Life Member of Middleboro Lodge of Elks, as well as Past District Deputy of the MA South District. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus #223, American Legion Post #64, and Mitchell Memorial Club, all of Middleborough; the Yankee Division Veterans Association – Boston Chapter; and AMVETS Post #1992 of Mount Dora, FL. He was a former member of the Lt. Norman Prince Drum and Bugle Corps and the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps.
Frank was also very involved with Saint Isidore Parish and Sacred Heart Church, where he served as a Lector. He took great pride in every organization and group he belonged to, but his most important moments were always spent with his family.
After his retirement, Frank and his beloved wife, Betty, moved to Leesburg, FL. They spent ten years enjoying a quiet life and traveling before returning north to be closer to family.
Frank was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife, Betty; and his siblings: Mary K. (Re Re) Sullivan, Lawrence Rooney, Theresa Earle, Thomas Rooney, Rosanne Rooney, and Leonard (Freddy) Rooney.
He is survived by his sister, Patricia (Rooney) Pinto; his son, Patrick D. Rooney and his wife, Paula, of Middleborough; his three daughters, whom he lovingly referred to as his Angels: Tracey A. (Rooney) Perkins of Hanson, Melissa S. (Rooney) McDaniel of Middleborough, and Lorraine F. (Rooney) Frawley and her husband, Allin, of Middleborough. Frank was a proud Grampa to 11 grandchildren: Kendra, Kasey, Hillary, Scott, Emilee, Sarah, Shea, Patrick, Paige, Kennedy, and Sullivan. He was also a proud Great-Grampa to five great-grandchildren: Caleigh, Makayla, Brenna, Nathan, and Lainey.
Frank will be truly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Family and friends are welcome to the visiting hours at the Ashley~Drolette Funeral Home, 35 Oak Street, Middleborough, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM.
All are invited to gather at the Ashley~Drolette Funeral Home, Middleborough, on Monday, October 19, 2026, starting at 9:45 AM, followed by Frank's Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Isidore Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 340 Centre Street, Middleborough, at 10:30 AM.
