Elks donate to support those with special needs
The Middleboro Elks recently presented $2,000 checks to two local organizations that provide support to individuals with special needs.
The Heart in Art will be using their grant to help people that can not afford to attend classes or programs, designed to increase their independence and creativity. The agency offers group classes and individual instruction in areas including, art, music, yoga, Drums Alive, Pound (a lively exercise class using drumsticks and movements to music), and cooking.
In coordination with the Elks, The Heart in Art also hosts an inclusive dance for teens and adults on the third Thursday of each month from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Elks, Light refreshments, door prizes, raffles, and non-alcoholic drinks are included in the $10 entry fee.
The next dance will take place Feb. 20 at the Elks lodge, 24 High St., Middleboro. For more information on the dance, e-mail moddiom@gmail.com.
The second $2,000 grant was provided to two local special needs school programs for enrichment and recognition activities for their students. READS Academy and The Futures Program at Middleboro High School each received $1,000.
Because the staffing needs at these programs are often so expensive, and many of these students are not able to attend integrated classes or activities, funds are not budgeted for enrichment or recognition events for the students, the Elks report.
