Lakeville Fire Department urges caution due to Canadian wildfire smoke
State environmental officials issued an air quality advisory Monday, Aug. 4, warning that conditions across Massachusetts were “unhealthy for sensitive groups” due to fine particulate matter from Canadian wildfires.
In the South Coast region, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection categorized the air quality as “moderate,” meaning the air remained generally acceptable but could affect unusually sensitive individuals.
In Lakeville, the Fire Department noted hazy skies and smoke odors and urged residents — particularly those with asthma, COPD or other respiratory conditions — to take precautions.
“Even though the smoke is from wildfires burning far away, we want to remind residents to stay alert,” the department wrote in a Facebook post. “If you detect unusual smoke conditions, odors, or suspect a local fire, do not hesitate to call. We would rather investigate and find nothing than miss a potential hazard.”
Residents were encouraged to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity as conditions persist. The state warning was in effect until midnight Aug. 4.
