Margaret is survived by her siblings, Alice (Charron) DeAbreu and her husband, Edmund of Halifax and Paul Charron and his wife, Joan, of Walpole. And by her children, Louise Woodruff and her husband, Ward of Niantic, Connecticut, Susan Pye of Middleborough, Andrea d’Entremont and her husband, Jim of Franklin and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Rice of Terrace, British Columbia. And by 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews. Margaret and Jesse cherished spending time together. They watched their family grow with deep pride and derived joy from supporting and visiting those both near and far.
Over her incredible 100 years of life, Margaret lived through countless important moments in history. However, no matter the external factors, she always faced life’s challenges with her unique commitment to people and her loving personality. Margaret Meyer changed and shaped lives, made and supported friendships and challenged the status quo with her kindness, integrity and commitment. Family, children, education and literature were paramount in Margaret’s life.
Margaret believed earnestly in Robert Fulghum's sentiment, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Her dedication to early childhood education is renowned, having been one of the first teachers of public kindergarten at the Halifax Elementary School in 1972 after beginning her career teaching first grade. Margaret began her teaching career at the age of 43 after graduating as a mature student (unprecedented at the time) from Bridgewater State College (now University). She served as a mentor, role model and friend to a great many young educators and touched the lives of countless children and their families. Retiring after 23 years teaching in Halifax, she left an important legacy of promoting volunteerism and family involvement in the school community.
Always a passionate reader and lover of children’s literature, Margaret continued to serve the children of Halifax as a volunteer at the Holmes Public Library and member of the Friends of the Holmes Public Library.
As longtime residents of Halifax, Margaret and Jesse invested in the local community in many ways before moving to Oak Point in Middleborough in June, 2000. During retirement they explored the country on road trips, working together to develop travel itineraries that would fill each other's bucket list of adventures. For nearly 50 years, they also cherished an annual pilgrimage to their favorite spot in Savage Harbour, Prince Edward Island, Canada to spend time together and with family.
Margaret was a resident and community member of the Hannah B.G. Shaw Home in Middleborough since January 2023, where she was provided with outstanding care and kindness.
Margaret’s family will celebrate her life and the legacy of Margaret and Jesse in a private memorial at a later date. No public services will be held.
