Opinion: Right to free speech doesn’t make speech right
I was disappointed to see the recent efforts to bring the culture wars to the Middleboro Public Schools through the legal fight over the "Two Genders" t-shirt.
The Morrisons and their supporters may argue that this is a First Amendment issue, but the fact is that Liam Morrison’s "Two Gender" t-shirt is nothing more than an effort to embarrass and marginalize those students who have a nontraditional gender identity.
Does that effort make Middleboro a better place to live? Middleboro’s public schools have worked hard to teach our children the values of acceptance and tolerance for difference. It is too bad when parents work to undercut those values.
I applaud Liam’s willingness to stand up for what he believes: It’s a good civic lesson. But he might also learn that sometimes the right to say something doesn’t mean that it’s the right thing to say.
