Special delivery: Postal customers donate more than 5,000 pounds of food

May 19, 2024

On Saturday, May 11, letter carriers in Lakeville and Middleboro did more than deliver mail to local residents. They also collected food donations left by those same residents during the annual Stamp Out Hunger program.

More than 5,000 pounds of food was collected, according to local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

In a program that began more than 30 years ago and is held  in thousands of communities across all 50 states nationwide, people are asked to leave food donations near their mailboxes on one day a year. Letter carriers subsequently collect the donations, which is delivered to area pantries to those facing food insecurity.

Local letter carriers thanked Royal Pizza in Lakeville, The Central Cafe in Middleboro and Dunkin’s for feeding volunteers who assisted with a day that received their stamp of approval.
