A skipping start: Apponequet girls field hockey team heads into the season

Sep 4, 2023

LAKEVILLE — With more players than in years prior, Apponequet girls field coach Cindy Cuthbertson said she feels hopeful heading into this season.

“Our numbers really got knocked down with Covid,” said Cuthbertson. “But now they are starting to get back up.”

The team prepared for their first game against Somerset on Tuesday, Sept. 5 by rehearsing drives and drills during their practice on Monday, Sept. 4.

“Last year was very much a rebuilding season,” said Cuthbertson. “We only had three wins.”

Cuthbertson said that her goal for the team this season is to make it to the state tournament.

“We are really just trying to rebuild the program and get us back to where we were,” said Cuthbertson.

The team warmed up for practice by skipping and forwards and backwards down the field.

Once each team member reached the end of the field, they performed their favorite dance move for fun. Players cheered on their dancing friends from the sidelines.

“It's a great group of kids, they work hard,” said Cuthbertson. “It's about finding the balance, you want them to work hard but you want them to have fun and you want them to like doing it.”

The next game will be held against Durfee High School at Apponequet High School on Friday, Sept. 8.
