MIDDLEBORO — After the raffle prizes had been drawn and crafts sold, the big winners of the Middleboro Elks Red White and Blues Festival were the area’s veterans.

Proceeds from the festival, which was held Sunday, Nov. 17 at the Elks Lodge and featured music, crafts and a motorcycle ride, helped to bolster the Elks’ mission of support for those who have served.

“They do a great job supporting the veterans,’’ said Middleboro Veterans Agent Steve Adelman. “It’s great that people come out to support’’ those who have served.

Outreach for veterans done by the Elks include providing suitcases so veterans have a consolidated, dignified way to transport their belongings from a hospital or facility; hosting events such as pizza parties for patients at the Brockton VA Medical Center and providing transportation to and from medical appointments.

The Elks also host veterans lunches and will provide toiletries and other items to those who might need them, said Amy Miller, Elks member and chair of the festival.

“Veterans are something near and dear to the Elks organization, especially here’’ in Middleboro, she said.

Crafters at the festival seconded that emotion. Middleboro resident Kate Donovan was selling mixed media shadow boxes and varying room decor options.

“It’s to support the veterans,’’ she said. “That’s why we’re here.’’

Her daughter, Merrin Donovan, 8, was selling her handmade ornaments. Merrin said she watched her mother making crafts and decided to give it a try.

Will she go into the crafts business like her mother, who works as a teacher but does the crafts as a sideline?

“Maybe,’’ she said with a shrug and a smile.  

This is the second annual event, which also included music from local bands. They are already planning next year’s celebration, Miller said, which will take place in September.
