Lakeville Police and Fire Departments rescue Jet Skier stranded in Long Pond

LAKEVILLE — Lakeville Fire and Police Departments rescued a missing 18-year-old male from Long Pond Thursday, Sept. 25, after the male was thrown from a Jet Ski he was operating.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday, Lakeville Police received a report that an 18-year-old Lakeville resident was overdue following a recreational Jet-Ski trip on Long Pond. According to police, moments later, multiple 911 calls were received from area residents who described “shouts for help” coming from the pond.
At approximately 8:48 p.m., Lieutenant Ryan Maltais located the missing 18-year-old on Lewis Island using a police boat. Police said the teen reported that he was thrown from the Jet Ski and swam to the island, which is inhabited but only accessible by boat.
Lakeville Fire Department officials said the individual was transported to nearby Captain Bub’s Marina, where Lakeville Emergency Medical Service personnel provided medical evaluation. The individual declined transport to the hospital.
Lakeville Police and Fire departments both responded to the scene, and automatic-aid protocols called on the Freetown Fire Department who assisted with a water vessel.
Multiple Lakeville Fire vehicles and ambulances were dispatched at various locations around Long Pond.
“Water rescues are always very chaotic. They are very difficult to locate. [The call] basically came in as somebody that was overdue, so we didn’t even know whether or not we actually had a water rescue,” said Lakeville Fire Department Chief Michael O’Brien.
O’Brien said the additional 911 calls made it clear that a water rescue was needed. He said the additional resources from the multi-agency effort is a necessity for the unexpected circumstances of water rescues.
“If you're out in the middle of the pond and something goes wrong, there's no help readily available,” O’Brien said. “The agencies all performed well together. The job got done and the person went home safely to their family.”
The Lakeville Police Department did not respond for additional comment by publication.
