With five games left in the regular season, Head Coach Zane Fyfe said the team is working to turn things around.
Fyfe said the team has faced multiple injuries recently, and the roster has seen week-to-week changes with new players that are striving to fill the gaps. He said through their 0 - 6 record, the team is sticking together to keep a positive mindset under the Friday-night-lights.
After the 23 - 28 loss to Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School on Friday, Nemasket Week Today Editor Sam Tucker caught up with Fyfe to find out how the team is working to get into the win column this season.
What have been some challenges you're working to overcome this season?
Fyfe: We’re just trying to put the whole lineup on the field at the same time. It's hard when we constantly have injuries. One week it's this guy, one week it's that guy — and the roster is thin to begin with. It's hard to put guys in positions and get them repetitions, and to get into a rhythm from week to week. We’re still trying to piece it all together.
What is the key to keeping a positive mindset through these challenges?
Fyfe: Sticking together. All the guys believe in each other, and they all get along great. They're always pushing for one another. The guys don’t say ‘I should be out there.’ They know whoever is out there, it’s their job this week and they’re going to do it. They're all very supportive.
What have you seen the squad learn so far this season?
Fyfe: Everybody has to do their job. If one guy doesn't do it, it can cost everybody else. You know, it's why football is the ultimate team sport. You have got to rely on all 11 guys working together as a unit to get things done. I think they're learning that.
What will the team be focusing on over the next couple of weeks?
Fyfe: Just executing, and doing the little things. I thought we did really well offensively like running the ball. We tried to attack them through the air tonight, but they had some good coverage out there. We were able to get going in the run game, but a missed block here and a missed block there — it costs you. So, we’ve just got to keep working on those little things.
What do you hope to achieve this season?
Fyfe: Win the last five games. That's the goal — if we finish the season five and six — that’s a win. We’re going to work to turn things around. We're getting better every single week. We've got a couple guys coming back from injury hopefully in two weeks — that’s when we take on Greater New Bedford Reg Voc-Tech High School. Hopefully, we'll be a little bit better out there.
