Lakeville Council on Aging offers spring activities

LAKEVILLE — The Lakeville Council on Aging offers the following events, workshops and programs in March and early April. Call the center, located at 1 Dear Crossing,  at 508-947-7224 for more information on any event, or to receive a copy of its monthly newsletter in the mail or by email.

The Lakeville Senior Connection airs on LakeCAM. Join center staff to hear all about the latest happenings, events, announcements and fun going on at the Senior Center, as well as throughout the town. Look for the March episode airing on Comcast Channels: LakeCAM Pub channel 26, Education 22 and Government 9 or Verizon Channels: LakeCAM Pub channel 32, Education 30 and Government 31.

Parkinson’s Support Group: Tuesday March 18 at 10 a.m.  The group shares information on, and experience with, treatments, medications, related

issues, online resources, and any topics participants will like to discuss. Find comfort from being with others who understand living with Parkinson’s.

Community Preservation Act Surcharge Application Assistance program is set for March 14.

Seniors with a low or moderate income may qualify for an exemption from the Community Preservation Act surcharge. Applications to apply for the exemption and information about income limits are now available at the senior center. Nancy Yeatts, treasurer for the Community Preservation Committee, will be available to answer questions and assist with completion of the applications on from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, March 14.

Applications are due to be filed with the Town Assessors office by April 1. Applications for the exemption must be filed every year.

Lakeville Select Board office hours are 10 a.m. Friday, March 14.

State Senator Michael Rodrigues office hours are 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 26.

Hearing Clinic is scheduled Thursday, March 13 from 10 a.m. to noon. Appointments are required. At Home Hearing Health Care will be at the senior center  to provide a free hearing aid cleaning and/or free exam.Appointments are required. Call 508-947-7224.

Coping with Grief or Loss Support Group is offered Thursday, March 13 at 1 p.m. 

This support group offers a different quality of support and connection that comes from being with people who have also experienced some type of loss. Sign-ups are not required, and walk-ins are always welcome. This program is Funded by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs in partnership with Massachusetts Councils on Aging and the City of New Bedford.

Elder Fraud Training will be available Thursday, March 13 at 1 p.m. 

The FBI in conjunction with the Lakeville Police Department will hold a training on the different types of elder fraud, how to identify scans, and how to report them to the proper authorities. Sign-ups are required, call 508-947-7224.

“Fancy Foot Work” Falls Prevention Workshop will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 18.

Learn home safety tips, exercises, and ways to enhance balance to reduce the risk of falls. Sign-ups are required at 508-947-7224.

Brain Builders takes place Tuesday, March 18 at 10 a.m. and Thursdays, April 10 and 24 at 1 p.m.

Strengthen the brain with special activities and small changes in daily routines. All are welcome. To sign up, call 508-947-7224.

Arts & Crafts with Amy will be offered Wednesday, March 19 at 10 a.m. 

Amy shows how to craft a colorful spring wreath. A fee of $20 includes all supplies and instruction. Call 508-947-7224 to reserve a spot.

For fans of both freshwater or saltwater fishing, a new angler group is hosted by Danny Reis at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 20.  Exchange stories about “the one that got away” and share experiences and knowledge with those new to the sport. 

Mobile Foot Care is available 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 27 by appointment. Call 508-947-7224 to sign up for a 20-minute session. This is a private pay service of $50, payable to the nurse by cash, check, Venmo or credit card. In-home services are also offered; these appointments are at least an hour in length and the private pay cost is $100.

Watch “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (rated PG) on Monday, March 24 at 1 p.m. and “The Upside” (rated PG-13) on Monday, March 31 at 1 p.m. Admission is $2 per person, per movie. Call to sign up at 508-947-7224.

Bingo and lunch is offered Tuesday, March 25 at noon. Spots are limited, and the cost is $5 due at time of sign-up. 

Play bunco from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, March 28.

Hand, Knee and Foot is offered Friday March 21 at 10 a.m. 

Drums Alive will be offered Tuesday, April 1 at 2 p.m. This program combines movement, music, and drum sticks to improve mental awareness, positive feelings, and an energizing workout. Instructor Casslyn offers this program free for Lakeville seniors in memory of her husband who loved to drum.

“Happy Mail” Card Making Class will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 1.

Make at least six handmade cards to take home to send “Happy Mail” out to loved ones.

Sign-ups are required and seating is limited. A fee of $10 per person due at sign-up.

A “Wicked” musical movie event takes place at noon Friday, April 4.

The movie, which is rated PG, runs for two hours and 40 minutes. An intermission break will be available to stretch legs and enjoy some “Wicked” delicious snacks. Free of charge; call 508-947-7224 to reserve a seat.
