Concerns about Middleboro bus arrivals lead to subcommittee formation

MIDDLEBORO — Issues with bus transportation on the first days of school have led to the formation of a transportation subcommittee to explore the situation, Middleboro School Committee members agreed at their Sept. 12 meeting.

Some buses arrived well ahead of schedule to stops in some cases, while other students reached school after the first bell, resident Sarah Zigouras said. Five Star Bus Company provides school transportation for Middleboro students.

This caused some students to arrive at the school buildings after the first bell, she said, when it is too late to partake in school breakfast. This leads to “stress and anxiety’’ for these children, Zagouras told the committee.

“How is that OK?’’ she asked.

Committee member Marcy Fregault questioned whether buses were contractually obligated to wait at a stop until the listed pick-up time.

She said she had heard of buses arriving “way early,’’ which could potentially force a student who arrives at the stated time to miss the bus.

This could raise issues in particular with middle school students, she added, because they do not have to be accompanied by an adult at the stop.

“They could be stuck in a position where they’re left home alone, with no way of getting to school,’’ Fregault noted, which could create “massive issues.’’

Committee member Chris Benson said that while the schools experienced a “good start overall’’ he had heard some complaints about bus routes as well. Although the issues were “smaller’’ than in past years, they are significant to the families affected, he said.

He also expressed concern about what he said was “fairly hostile language’’ in phone conversations about bus issues.

“We as a district and Five Star need to always be professional,’’ Benson noted.

Superintendent of Schools Carolyn Lyons said she would check the wording of the contract about the timing issues.

Benson agreed to chair a transportation subcommittee to review the situation. Committee member Zeke Lewis will also serve on the subcommittee.
