Playground story walk dedicated to former Lakeville Library Friend
LAKEVILLE — The Friends of the Lakeville Public Library dedicated the story walk at Gamache Playground to Basille Kyranos, a former library friend and reading specialist teacher.
A story walk combines a children’s picture book with a walk along a path or trail. Pages from the book are displayed sequentially on posts or signs, encouraging families to read together as they move from one page to the next.
Currently, the story featured in Gamache Playground at Ted Williams Camp is “The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear.” Lakeville Librarian Teresa Mirra said the story walks change with the season and, as “strawberry season” is right around the corner, the story seemed appropriate.
The Friends decided to dedicate the story walk to Kyranos after her family made a donation last year. Born in Lowell, Kyranos died in 2023. She taught in Taunton Public Schools for 36 years and volunteered with the friends for “many years.”
President of the Friends of the Lakeville Library, Maria Martin, said she realized that Kyranos’ contributions to the Lakeville Library had not yet been officially recognized.
Martin said the donation “reminded us of people who do a lot for this library, and we hadn't done anything, I don't think in the library for her.”
Kyranos’ cousin, Elaine Kyranos, said the pair spent “many, many hours at the library.
“We didn't have television really. When we were very, very young. Her love of books started then. We weren't allowed to read funny books or comic books, but books we took out all the time,” she said.
