Middleboro awarded half a million for new skate park
MIDDLEBORO — A new skate park could be rolling into Middleboro.
Middleboro will receive $495,000 worth of funding that will go towards the renovation of its twenty-year-old skate park, the governor’s administration announced on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
This money was awarded as part of the Healey-Driscoll administration’s approval of $27.8 million in grant funding for park improvement and open space restoration across Massachusetts.
The funds were given out under the Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) grant, which the town’s grant writer Stephanie Hall has said previously would be challenging to receive.
This grant will cover the cost of a two-year project to design and construct a new skate park at its existing location next to the refurbished Peirce Playground, said Hall.
“We are very excited to have been awarded the PARC Grant to help with the funding of the new Skate Park,” said Town Manager James McGrail.
The grant would not cover all of the project’s $795,000 price tag. The remaining $255,000 will be paid through additional funding, according to McGrail.
“We are working to find donors to complete the funding needed to build the new park and we are looking forward to presenting the plans for the new park to the community as soon as possible,” he said.
Voters will be asked to approve funding the total cost of the project at Special Town Meeting on Monday, Oct. 7. This money will be reimbursed to the town using the funds awarded by the grant.
This represents an important step forward for a group of Middleboro residents that has been lobbying for the skate park’s renovation since 2020.
