Two dead in single-vehicle crash on I-495

MIDDLEBORO — Two people were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 in Middleboro on the afternoon of Thursday, May 15, according to Middleboro Fire Chief Owen Thompson.

Officials have identified the victims as an adult male and female but have not released their names. 

At approximately 12:28 p.m. Middleboro Fire Department crews responded to reports of a serious crash on I-495 northbound near the Cherry Street overpass. Upon arrival, firefighters found a vehicle off the road and engulfed in flames in a wooded area.

Crews worked swiftly to extinguish the fire, according to Thompson. The male victim was found outside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The female victim, located inside the vehicle, was also pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

All northbound lanes of I-495 were initially closed to allow emergency personnel to respond. The left lane has since been reopened. The right and breakdown lanes remain closed as the investigation continues.

Coastal Ambulance assisted at the scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police, with support from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.
