They’ll be jingling all the way at Middleboro Christmas parade

MIDDLEBORO — The turkey has been consumed, the leftovers have been packed into the fridge and Middleboro is ready to welcome in the Christmas season.

The 64th annual Christmas parade will step off at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 from Burkland School, winds its way through town before ending its circular route back at the school.

This year’s theme is “A Hollywood Christmas,’’ said Greg Thomas, who co-chairs the parade with his wife, Jen Thomas. Floats will reflect themes of popular Hollywood-themed movies and shows, such as “Elf,’’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas’’ and “Christmas Vacation.’’

Only one Santa and Mrs. Claus appear in the parade, and the popular pair, as portrayed by Greg and Jen Thomas, get to ride in a fire truck.

The parade has become a “family tradition,’’ Thomas said, since its origins nearly 65 years ago. The event began as a way to encourage people to visit downtown businesses.

“It’s been a mainstay ever since,’’ he said. The community has been supportive from the start, he said.

This year’s grand marshals will be Robin and Garrett Perry. He retired this year from the Middleboro Cobras after 35 years.

Rain date is Sunday, Dec. 1, although Thomas said they have been fortunate with the weather through the years.

After the parade, Mr. and Mrs. Claus will visit the Hideway Restaurant, 9 Station St., where there will be games, face-painting, a bounce house and other attractions.

The parade allows the community to step into the season, Greg Thomas said.

“Thanksgiving ends, and this puts you right into the spirit,’’ he said. “It’s special. We love it.’’
