Summer Fun at the Lakeville Senior Center

LAKEVILLE — We may be heading into the Lazy Days of summer, but the Lakeville Council on Aging has a wide variety activities and events planned in July to keep residents plenty busy. 

For those interested, there is still availability to sign up for Digital Literacy/Computer Instruction courses at the Lakeville COA. Classes are held on Thursdays at the COA at 1 p.m. There will be six sessions with four classes per session. Classes are 2-3 hours. Cost is $10 per session. Payment is due at sign-up. There are six available spaces per session. Speak with the office once you have decided which class to sign up for. Spots are still available for the August session (course dates are August 8, 15, 22 and 29). July and September sessions are full. There are also spots available for the following sessions/dates:

October: 3, 10, 17, 24

November: Thursdays 7, 14, 21 & Friday 22

December: Thursdays 5, 12, 19, 20 & Friday 21

The COA’s six new laptops and instructor for these classes were funded by The Senator Rodrigues Community Empowerment Fund of the South Coast Community Foundation. 

The Council on Aging Outreach Services are available to assist seniors and their families on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only. Some services available for referrals are fuel assistance, food bank, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, caregiver services and housing. Friday morning cafés are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Coffee, tea, juices, water, and plenty of snacks will be provided. No sign-ups are necessary and this is not restricted to Lakeville seniors. 

The Lakeville Select Board will be visiting the Council on Aging on Friday, July 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

State Representative Norman Orrall will be visiting the COA on Monday, July 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

State Senator Michael Rodrigues will host office hours on Wednesday, July 24 from 11:30-12:30 p.m. 

Attorney Adam Bond of Middleboro is offering free 20-minute consultations for Lakeville seniors by appointment only Tuesday, July 23 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Blood Pressure with Carol will be held in the craft room on Monday, July 15 and Monday, July 29 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. 

The Lakeville Fire Department will also stop by during morning cafés to do blood pressure checks on Friday, July 12 and Friday, July 26. No appointment necessary.

Veterans Agent Wilford Corey has office hours every Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Agent Corey can be reached at 508-946-8824 or 508-947-7224, ext.3. 

S.H.I.N.E. (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) Counselors are available by appointment. Call the office at 508-947-7224 for more information. 

The Parkinson’s Support Group meets every first and third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. 

The Lakeville COA provides van transportation Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Lakeville residents. You must be 60 years or older or have a disability and be GATRA approved. Transportation is only offered between Middleboro and Lakeville. Those interested must give 24 hours notice for a ride. One-way trip cost is $1.75 and roundtrip cost is $3.50, or residents can buy a buss pass for 10 rides for $15. Call the COA with questions or to schedule a ride at 508-947-7224.

The COA will host its book club meeting on Monday, July 8 at 1 p.m. to discuss “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah. Signups not required and walk-ins are welcome. 

As part of the Lakeville COA’s “Monday Movie Madness,” the senior center will be showing “Grease” on Monday, July 8 at 1 p.m. and “The Help” on Monday, July 22 at 1 p.m. Please call 508-947-7224 to sign up. Admission is $2. 

The summer series of Brain Builders classes will be held on Tuesday, July 9 and July 30 at 1 p.m. Exercise your thinking skills with “Leader Lisa” from Buzzards Bay Speech Therapy. All new brain builders classes begin this month. Our summer series will introduce skill building strategies to new participants while continuing to challenge regular attendees. All are welcome. The COA will host an OCES Dementia presentation on Tuesday, July 9 at 10:00 a.m. The goal of the presentation is to help everyone in a community understand the five key messages about dementia, how it affects people, and how we each can make a difference in the lives of people living with the disease. On Thursday, July 11 at 1 p.m., the senior center will host a Grief/Loss Support group. Signups are appreciated but not required and walk-ins are always welcome. Call the office at 508-947-7224 to signup. 

The COA will host a hearing clinic with Lauren on Thursday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Appointments are required. Call 508-947-7224 and press 1 to signup. 

A “Happy Mail Card Making” class will be held at the COA On Thursday July 11 at 10 a.m. Attendees will take home at least six cards to send “happy mail” out to loved ones. There will be a variety of card stock, ink, stamps etc. available to mix and match and make something unique.

A Self-care Acupressure class will be held on Friday, July 12 at 1 p.m. to help residents with arthritis relief. Self-care acupressure is a practice that involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to relieve pain and promote healing. The beauty of self-care acupressure is that individuals can perform it at their convenience without the need for special equipment or professional intervention.

Congregate meals will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. on the following dates: July 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 and 31. Meals are prepared by OCES meal site coordinator Dawn Rivers. Payment is not required, although a suggested donation of $2.50 may be left. Sign-ups are required the week before. A Rhino and Wingate Community Engagement Informational Session will be held at the COA on Monday, July 15 at 3:00 p.m. The Wingate Living Collective, which encompasses independent living, assisted living and memory care options for older adults, will operate the assisted living and independent living facilities that have been proposed for the former Lakeville Hospital property. Representatives from Wingate will be at the event for details, discussion and a Q & A.

Craft Day with Amy will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at 10 a.m. The cost $20 and that includes supplies. Attendees will create their own garden stepping stone. Call 508-947-7224 and press 1 to sign up.

A Vaccine Information Session will be held on Monday, July 29th at 1 p.m. Pediatrician Martin Gross is an expert on vaccines for all ages and will provide an overview of vaccines from the earliest use to the present as well as review recommended vaccinations for all ages. From children to seniors, Dr. Gross will cover routine immunization schedules endorsed by medical and public health experts. Come learn about nature’s pharmaceuticals during the essential oils program on Tuesday, July 30 at 10 a.m. Attendees will be able to take a creation home for $5. Call 508-947-7224 to sign up.
