Seniors have IT: Graduates of digital literacy course celebrated
LAKEVILLE — Lakeville seniors learned to become more comfortable with their laptops through a recent inaugural Digital Literacy program at the Lakeville Council on Aging.
Participants who completed the course were honored at a Digital Literacy graduation ceremony March 21.
The program was something that Senior Center Director Lori Fahey had wanted to do for some time. Through her outreach, the center received a $10,000 grant from the Senator Michael J. Rodrigues Empowerment Fund through the Southcoast Community Foundation to support the program.
Fahey was able to purchase six laptops, which were set up with assistance from Bob McNally, Lakeville’s information technology specialist. Instructor Jennifer Shallcross put together a four-session laptop course.
With each course, participants developed hands-on experience and participated in activities aimed at making them comfortable and confident with the topics that were covered.
At the ceremony, the first graduates of the course received a course completion certificate signed by Fahey, Shallcross and Rodrigues. Select Board members Lorraine Carboni and Lia Fabian, Town Administrator Andrew Sukeforth and State Rep. Norman Orrall also attended.
The senior center received a second grant for a new round of courses that will begin in May. Classes are filling up quickly; Fahey encourages anyone interested to call the center at 508-947-7224.
“I want to thank all involved with making this dream a reality,’’ Fahey said. “It takes a village.’’
