Power outages strike Lakeville, Middleboro during record heat

Jun 24, 2025

A cooling center is open at Nichols Middle School on Tiger Drive in Middleboro after much of Middleboro and parts of Lakeville lost electricity on the hottest day of the year.

The power outage is attributed to a transformer issue and not a grid problem, Middleboro Town Manager James McGrail said. The power was lost at about 4:30 p.m., he said.

The outages extended into Lakeville according to Lakeville Select Board Chair Maureen Candito. She said the affected area includes Pickens Street and Kingman Street. The Lakeville Public Library and Transfer Station also lost power.

Lakeville’s cooling center is located at the Council on Aging at 1 Dear Crossing and access is available by request. To request access call 508-947-4121.

Middleboro’s center will be open until at least 8 p.m. If the situation is not resolved by then, the center will remain open longer, McGrail said.

Food and bottled water will be available.

Pets are welcome and an ambulance will be on site for anyone with health issues.

Anyone who needs a ride should call the non-emergency Fire Department number at 508-946-2461.
