Pancake breakfast at senior center an egg-cellent success

May 4, 2024

MIDDLEBORO — Those in attendance at the annual pancake breakfast at the Council on Aging on Saturday, May 4 ranged from one-year-olds to one-hundred-and-one-year-olds. No matter their age, however, all shared a common sentiment: the breakfast buffet was a hit.

A quick glance around the packed Council on Aging cafeteria, where attendees sat down with loaded plates of pancakes, eggs, sausage and ham, was evidence enough.

Amongst those who rated the meal with a thumbs up was Elizabeth Bryant. Bryant is 101 years old. To her, however, “age is just a number. It’s what you make of it.” Sitting next to her was Everly Kerns, who was just one year old.

Bryant, whose favorite breakfast food “is coffee” said the day’s meal “was very good,” adding that “it was a big one.”

The annual breakfast is hosted by Middleboro Friends, a group that funds all sorts of events to benefit the community, such as the town’s Summer Concert Series.

All of the money raised at the event goes towards the senior center, said organizers.

By 10:30 a.m.,165 tickets had been purchased.

“We usually end up donating about a thousand dollars a year. This year might be a little bit better with the crowd that we have here today,” noted Middleboro Friends member Brian Giovanoni, who also sits on the town’s Select Board.

It was June Perkins’ 15th year assisting with the event. Perkins is also part of the Middleboro Friends organization. “The crowd this year was just amazing,” she said.

Town officials and members of the Select Board worked the buffet and the cash box. At the end of the buffet line, ladling syrup onto stacks of berry-filled pancakes, was town manager Jay McGrail.

Diana Carlson and her daughter Skylar came out for the pancakes, but also for the cause. “I came out to support the Council on Aging, I come out every year. And Skylar likes pancakes, so that’s why we’re here,” said Carlson.
