Middleboro town manager chosen for top position in Harwich
HARWICH — Harwich officials have elected Middleboro Town Manager James McGrail as their new town administrator.
The Harwich Select Board unanimously elected McGrail during a Monday, Jan. 12 meeting. Officials said McGrail’s communication skills and previous experience made him the right choice for Harwich’s top position.
McGrail was among three candidates hoping to fill the position. The Harwich Select Board was also considering Marion Town Administrator Geoffrey Gorman and former Winchendon Town Manager Jim Kreidler for the position.
“I'm happy and excited. It's been a long process,” McGrail said. “I was very excited that they unanimously selected me on the first vote. It's a rewarding feeling.”
McGrail, a Sandwich resident, has been Middleboro’s town administrator since 2022. His current contract with Middleboro ends Aug. 31, 2027.
He has previously said the Harwich job offers him an opportunity to work closer to his home and family on Cape Cod.
The Select Board commented that during the interview process, McGrail demonstrated empathy and good communication skills crucial for success in this position.
“What stood out about James was his ability to both communicate with us as a board, residents and also being able to make the hard decisions if he was chosen to be the town administrator,” said Harwich Select Board Member Jeffrey Handler.
McGrail said he is unsure when he will begin his new role meanwhile Middleboro will be in need of a new town manager.
He said his next step is to focus on negotiating a contract deal and looks to find success for the town of Harwich in the coming months.
“I'm just excited about the opportunity,” he said. “I'm looking forward to having longer conversations with Harwich about the potential.”
