Middleboro battles fire in woods amid dry, windy conditions
MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro Fire battled a fire in the woods at 25 Thompson St. Sunday, May 14, at about the same time as emergency personnel responded to a teenager struck by a vehicle on Route 28.
The fire was reported at about 10:30 p.m., Fire Chief Owen Thompson said. No injuries were reported and no structures were involved, he said.
Lakeville and Carver fire departments provided mutual aid in helping extinguish the blaze.
“There’s been a strong uptick in brush fires’’ recently, Thompson said. Conditions have been “really dry.’’
The lack of the usual amount of spring rain and the limited amount of snow through the winter led to dry ground conditions, he said.
That makes conditions more susceptible to brush fires, he said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
