MIDDLEBORO  Superintendent Carolyn Lyons is taking a leave of absence for health-related reasons, the Middleboro School Committee announced.

The committee appointed Michael Perrone, the district’s director of business and finance, as interim superintendent on Aug. 18. School Committee Chair Zeke Lewis did not say how long Lyons is expected to be on leave.

“Thank you for respecting Superintendent Lyons’s privacy,” Lewis wrote in a statement to parents, faculty and staff.

Perrone joined the Middleboro Public Schools about a year and a half ago, bringing with him what Lewis described as a “wealth of experience.” He has previously served in interim leadership roles in other districts.

“He has earned the respect and confidence of the School Committee through his leadership in the budget-building process and his commitment to supporting our schools during his tenure in Middleboro,” Lewis wrote.

In a separate statement, Perrone said the district’s mission remains to provide the best possible learning experience for students.

“The work we do as a community truly makes a difference for our students, and I am honored to serve in this role,” he wrote.
