Looking back on 2023 in Middleboro and Lakeville

Dec 26, 2023

Some things changed but some things stayed the same in 2023 for Middleboro and Lakeville.

The two towns will end up leaving 2023 looking similar to how they began the year. A new MBTA station in Middleboro was delayed until 2024, so commuters will continue to use the current station on the border of Middleboro and Lakeville.

Two golf courses also changed ownership in Lakeville. LeBaron Hills was purchased by Brian Conefrey and will continue to be operated as a golf course. The Back Nine Club was also purchased in 2023 by Robert Poillucci, who says he will continue operating the property as a golf club and that the “course has not looked this good in 7 years.”

Middleboro and Lakeville spent 2023 saying goodbye to outgoing personnel but welcoming new additions.

In Lakeville, Ari Sky, the town administrator since 2021, announced that he would be resigning to take a job in Watertown. The Lakeville Select Board appointed Robert Nunes, the former Middleboro town manager, as Sky’s temporary replacement while the town conducts a search for a permanent replacement. Lakeville also welcomed a new library director, Jennifer Jones, who said she was looking forward to meeting new people in her new role.

In Middleboro, the select board welcomed a new member: Thomas White. Former Middleboro Select Board member Arthur Battistini also resigned in 2023 because he had accepted a job that would require him to leave Middleboro.

Several Middleboro residents celebrated big milestones in 2023. Ruth Calhoun celebrated her 100th birthday, Kathleen Milan also celebrated her 100th birthday, and Emily Sparkman celebrated her 103rd birthday.

Both towns also celebrated athletic accomplishments. The Middleboro High School softball team won the state championship in 2023. The FreeLake 8U All-Star team placed third in the Cal Ripken World Series. Lakeville resident Noah Meunier also competed on the American Ninja Warrior television show.
