Fire destroys farm building in Lakeville

LAKEVILLE — A farm building at 32 Southworth St. was destroyed by fire Thursday night, Lakeville Fire Chief Michael O’Brien reported.

At least seven 911 calls were received at about 6:47 p.m. reporting a large fire, the chief said.

A resident of a nearby home heard an explosion that shook his home. He went outside and saw a large building on the farm property in flames, O’Brien said.

No injuries to humans or animals were reported in the blaze. The building served as a shop and storage area for the farm.

Horses and other farm animals were relocated from a nearby barn, the chief said.

No other property at the site was damaged. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading.

At the time of the blaze, the department was already committed to a medical emergency.

A lone firefighter responded with Engine 2 to the scene. O’Brien and Deputy Chief Pamela Garant joined the response from their homes.

All off-duty and on-call staff were called to the scene.

Two additional tankers were requested because the area lacks fire hydrants, the chief said.

Firefighters remained on the scene for more than five hours extinguishing the fire. Freezing conditions made the scene hazardous, the chief reported, because firefighters had great difficulty navigating the ice-covered ground.

Mutual aid was provided by Middleboro, Freetown, Raynham and Berkley fire departments, the state Department of Fire Services and the Providence Canteen.

Lakeville Police assisted with securing the scene and controlling traffic. Lakeville Department of Public Works and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation helped with sanding the roads and Middleboro Gas and Electric isolated the utilities.

The cause of the fire is undetermined but does not appear suspicious, the chief said.
