Event celebrates heart and Soule of farm life

MIDDLEBORO — Cecilia Araujo found the perfect recipe for a fun time on the farm.

The seven-year-old and her brother, Nelson Araujo, 5,created a “vegetable’’ soup by mixing corn, pepper and mushrooms with an unusual base: Mud.

Their creation may not be the most appetizing but the activity reflects the theme of learning the value of farm life that was a theme of the Harvest Fair, held Saturday, Sept. 28 at Soule Homestead Education Center.

After all, vegetables, including that corn, peppers and mushrooms, don’t grow in grocery stores.

The day was “going great,’’ farm executive director Kelly MacDonald said as families made their way through educational exhibits, food options and musical performances. “It’s a great turnout.’’

“It’s a nice day to enjoy the farm and engage with local businesses and learn a little bit about farming,’’ MacDonald said.

The hayride is “super popular,’’ she said. This year, the farm added a story walk featuring the book “Farmer Eva’s Green Garden Life’’ by local author Jacqueline Briggs Martin. Accompanying plots of land helped to explain portions of the story.

The walk was presented in coordination with the Middleboro Public Library.

Katelyn Manfredo decided to bring her family out for the day. “We were out for some family fun on a Saturday,’’ she said as she watched her daughter Emerson Manfredo, 5, paint a pumpkin.

Cecilia Araujo summed up her favorite part of the day in one word: “Everything.’’

But then, on second thought, the soup maker had another idea. “Mostly, I liked the dirt,’’ she said.
