Artist selected for downtown Middleboro display

MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro High School student Savannah Byrne’s artwork has been selected to be exhibited in the windows of the Middleboro Community Cable Access Media studio.

A grand opening for the art installation will take place Saturday, June 24, from 5-7 p.m. at the corner of Center and Main Streets.

Byrne was selected by the high school’s Innovation Lab Coordinator Tony Chiuppi, according to a press release from the Town of Middleboro. Students in the Innovation Lab will make stencils from Byrne’s designs to be placed over a fabric backing.

The sun will shine through the windows, which are not protected from ultraviolet light. As a result, the designs in the stencils will be burned onto the fabric.

Because of that process and the artist’s name, the project is titled ‘The Byrne Project.’

The artwork will feature a poem about the sun and a visual representation of Middleboro’s urban and rural landscapes, the press release said.

The fabric displaying the design will be up for four weeks in the studio windows.

Joe Escolas, Middleboro High School media lab graduate and Cable Access User — someone who records events for the channel — created five short videos to advertise the project. The videos will be shown at the grand opening, along with a short film by Byrne.

Byrne received mentorship from Ariel Hallgren, the owner of Middleboro’s H2 Design Studio, which specializes in museum displays and three-dimensional designs. Hallgren also acted as the financial sponsor for the artist, the press release said.

The Office of Economic and Community Development received a $4,000 grant from the Middleboro Cultural Council last fall, some of which was used for the project.

The grand opening is part of a larger event called Fab Fest, which the town hopes will become an annual tradition. Fab Fest will include a Pride fest on the Town Hall Lawn, a Fashion Show on Thatchers’ Row, and live music at Kramer Park.

Dates for each Fab Fest event will be posted once announced.
