April vacation on in Middleboro but last day still uncertain
MIDDLEBORO -- Families in Middleboro will not have to reschedule their April school vacation plans.
That is one answer state education officials have provided about the blizzard’s impact on the remaining school year, Acting Superintendent Michael Perrone told School Committee members at their March 5 meeting.
But perhaps the biggest question of all -- when will the school year end -- remains uncertain, he said.
Based on snow days taken so far, including the five lost to the February blizzard, the school year will end June 30. Thedistrict has applied for a waiver that would allow the schools to close Friday, June 26, Perrone said.
This would eliminate the need for school to continue Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30.
No decision has been made on that waiver, although Perrone said he is “confident we will be accepted.’’
Graduation will not be impacted, he said, with the original date of June 6 still set. Two holidays scheduled later in the school year, Memorial Day on May 25 and Juneteenth on June 19, will remain as off days, he said.
Perrone does not know when the district will receive an answer about the final day, noting with a chuckle that he has been asked the question “at least ten times today.’’
The schools were most recently closed for five days following a historic storm that dropped more than 30 inches of snow on the town.
