All aboard! Test trains running on South Coast Rail Route
MIDDLEBORO — The ground underneath your home may start to shake, but fear not, it’s no earthquake.
Test trains are running between Middleboro and the East Taunton, Freetown, Fall River Depot, Church Street, and New Bedford railway stations, the six stations that form a part of the South Coast Rail Project.
Once complete, the project will restore train transportation between Boston and the South Coast for the first time in over 70 years.
Test trains began in operation on Monday, June 17, according to the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority.
During this testing phase, safety measures such as track testing, signaling system testing, integration testing and safety inspections will be examined, according to the MBTA.
Trains will not carry passengers and will solely be used for testing purposes. They will travel at a maximum speed of 79 miles per hour.
Construction of four stations along the South Coast Rail Project route, including Middleboro, Fall River, Freetown and Church Street, has already been completed. The New Bedford station is expected to be completed by mid July and the East Taunton station by mid August, according to the MBTA.
The railway is projected to be in operation in the Spring of 2025, said MBTA personnel.
