115-year-old School Street School to house central administration

MIDDLEBORO — Renovation work on the 115-year-old School Street School continues as the building is prepared to house school administration, Superintendent of Schools Carolyn Lyons told the Middleboro School Committee at their Aug. 18 meeting.

The building is scheduled to open this fall, Lyons said.

This will free up classroom spaces for their original intent: To house teachers, students and educational programming, Lyons said. Administrators are currently located in various spaces within the school buildings.

School Street School has a rich educational history. The vintage building at 6 School St. opened in 1907 as an eight-room schoolhouse.

Through the years, the building has housed a junior high school, intermediate school and an elementary school. The site most recently served as the location for the Regional Educational Assessment and Diagnostic Services, also known as READS Collaborative.

When READS Collaborative moved out in the summer of 2021, the site became vacant and school officials couldn’t find a tenant, Lyons said.

So the decision was made to centralize administration into one building, Lyons said.

The first floor will house the director of curriculum, director of special education, registrar and data specialist and pupil personnel services.

The professional development center, director of student services, IT coordinator, administrative assistant to the superintendent of school and the superintendent of schools will be located on the second floor.

The refurbishing work at the building continues, Lyons said. The redo includes renovating basic flooring in classrooms, making upgrades to the heating system, bathroom, technology, electrical and heating systems, adding minimal office furniture and paving.

The project will cost about $300,000, which Lyons said will be covered by Chapter 70 finances, money from facilities rentals and any available unspent FY22 funds.

Lyons thanked the building facilities personnel for their efforts.

“It really does look quite amazing,’’ she said.
