Healey honored for 40 years of service and counting

MIDDLEBORO — John “Jack’’ Jack Healey leaves a big hole to fill as he retires from the Planning Board, board chair Allin Frawley told the select board at their Jan. 27 meeting.

That hole is filled with town experience dating back 40 years, when Healey was hired as Middleboro Town Manager. His employment, which lasted until 2007, began decades of service to the town where he has lived since 1987.

“I never thought I’d be here because I always assumed Jack would be here, "Frawley said of Healey’s retirement. “I assumed that because Jack has always been here.’’

When Healey retired from the town manager position in 2007, he didn’t just take his pension and leave, Frawley noted. Instead, he continued to serve the town in a variety of capacities.

He served on the Planning Board and Zoning Board from 2016 to 2024, when he announced his retirement.

Healey was honored with a plaque and a short ceremony at the meeting, where his retirement was honored and his contributions to the town were recognized.

“To say Jack is going to be missed is a huge understatement,’’ Frawley said.

Healey is not the only Planning Board member with deep town knowledge and experience. Frawley also saluted William B. Garceau, who has served on the board since 1992. Garceau is the town’s longest-serving elected official.

“Listening to those two guys talk before and after the meetings, that’s when you pick up little nuggets of history and knowledge,’’ Frawley said.

In addition to his work in Middleboro, Healey has served as town administrator in Wareham and interim town administrator in Freetown, Southbridge, Kingston and Westport.

Healey’s experiences transcend the political arena. He is a founding member and co-chair of Middleboro Youth Advocates and served as chairman of the Board of Deacons at LifeHouse Church.

And his service has not ended: He continues to serve on the Middleboro Gas and Electric Board of Commissioners.

The plaque he received reads: “We are grateful for your tireless efforts and unwavering service in fostering a thriving community for all residents.’’

He received a standing ovation after the ceremony.
