MIDDLEBORO — Private First Class Arthur Shaw, who was a paratrooper in World War II, serving in the 82nd airborne division, received a “Quilt of Valor’’ Jan. 16 at the monthly veterans lunch at Middleboro Elks Lodge 1274.

Sharon Cumisky presented a handmade quilt to the World War II veteran, which had his rank and name sewn into it.

This was more than a commemorative gift: Cumisky explained that the quilt is washable and meant to be used.

Shaw spoke briefly about his experiences. He was very humble, but onlookers said he obviously experienced some intensive things during his 18 months of wartime service.

The “Quilt of Valor”  program has provided over 1 million quilts to deserving veterans across the country and world.

About 75 to 80 veterans and volunteers attended the monthly lunch.
