Kids fill Battis Field for annual weenie roast

MIDDLEBORO — Since 1957, youngsters have enjoyed a weenie roast at Battis Field in Middleboro, and this year was no different as approximately 125 kids came out on Thursday, Aug. 8 for the annual Joe Masi “Hall of Fame” Weenie Roast.

Masi was the superintendent of the Middleboro Park Department from 1955 to 1998 and started the weenie roast in 1957 for children to attend free of charge. This year’s approximately 125 attendees enjoyed hamburgers and linguica in addition to the traditional weenie.

“This year’s weenie roast was a fun-filled activity enjoyed by all,” according to park department employee Jo Ruthwicz. “The weather cooperated with partly clouded skies and mild temperatures.”

With temperatures reaching into the 90s in the weeks preceding the weenie roast, Thursday’s temperatures in the 70s brought a welcome respite to weenie enjoyers.

“The Park Department grounds crew made sure the event was set up and safely executed without any difficulties,” said  Ruthwicz. “The wonderful food and conversations of the cookout made for a great time for the summer program children, staff and the community.”
