August Happenings at the Lakeville Senior Center

LAKEVILLE — From Estate Planning sessions to Essential Oils classes, the Lakeville senior center has a variety of activities planned to ensure Lakeville residents enjoy every last minute of summer. 

The Council on Aging Outreach Services are available to assist seniors and their families on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only. Some services available for referrals are fuel assistance, food bank, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, caregiver services and housing. Friday morning cafés are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Coffee, tea, juices, water, and plenty of snacks will be provided. No sign-ups are necessary and this is not restricted to Lakeville seniors. The water dispenser has now been moved into the big room for all to use.

A member of the Lakeville Select Board will be visiting the Council on Aging on Friday, Aug. 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

State Representative Norman Orrall will be visiting the COA on Monday, Aug. 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

State Senator Michael Rodrigues will host office hours on Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 11:30-12:30 p.m. 

Attorney Adam Bond of Middleboro is offering free 20-minute consultations for Lakeville seniors by appointment only Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Blood Pressure with Carol will be held in the craft room on Monday, Aug. 5 and Monday, Aug. 19 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. 

The Lakeville Fire Department will also stop by during morning cafés to do blood pressure checks on Friday, Aug. 9 and Friday, Aug. 23. No appointment necessary.

Veteran’s Agent Wilford Corey has retired. For those who need immediate assistance during this interim period, call Lakeville’s Human Resources Director Lacey Marshall at 508-946-8808. 

S.H.I.N.E. (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) Counselors are available by appointment. Call the office at 508-947-7224 for more information. 

The Parkinson’s Support Group meets every first and third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. 

Learn the basics of estate planning at an Estate Planning 101 course on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. with Attorney Rebecca Spinner of Surprenant & Beneski, P.C. Sign-ups required. Call the office at 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

Improve your hearing at a hearing clinic with At Home Hearing Health Care on Thursday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Free hearing aid cleanings and eye exams will be available. Appointments are required, call 508-947-7224 and press 1. 

The Grief/Loss support group will hold a session on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 1 p.m. Sign-ups are not required and walk-ins are always welcome. 

The next book club meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. This month’s discussion will feature the book “The Marriage Portrait” by Maggie O’Farrell. Sign-ups not required and walk-ins welcome. Newcomers are welcome. 

The next S.A.L.T (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) TRIAD Council Meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 12 at 1 p.m. During the meeting, the Lakeville Fire Department will discuss a plan for how to get out of the house in 3 minutes or less. 

Relax at a Gong Bath session at the COA on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 10 a.m. The class is a multi-dimensional sound experience that offers profound relaxation and refreshes the mind, body and spirit. The film “I’ll See You in My Dreams” will be shown at the Lakeville COA on Monday, Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. In this is a vibrant, funny and heartfelt film,  a widow and former songstress discover that life can begin anew at any age. Call 508-947-7224 to sign up. Admission is $2 per person per movie. 

Congregate meals are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. on the following dates: August 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28. Meals are prepared by OCES meal site coordinator Dawn Rivers. Brain Builders will continue with classes on Tuesday, Aug. 13 and Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. Exercise your thinking skills with “Leader Lisa” from Buzzards Bay Speech Therapy. All new brain builders classes begin this month. Our summer series will introduce skill building strategies to new participants while continuing to challenge regular attendees. All are welcome. All American Assisted Living at Raynham will host a technology workshop, called “The Art of Technology” on Friday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. Participants will learn about smartphone basics and how to browse the internet. Sign-ups begin immediately. Call the office at 508-947-7224 and press 1.

This month’s Nutrition with Ashley Whewell will be held on Friday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. and will review the myths and truths about artificial sweeteners. Classes conclude with a recipe to try. Call the office at 508-947-7224 to sign up. 

The Lakeville COA welcomes two new programs: A Caregiver Support Group as well as Mobile Foot Care services. 

The Caregiver Support Group will offer guidance and assistance to those who are caring for their loved ones. The group will hold its first session Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. The group will meet on the third Tuesday of the month through Oct. 1. Call the office at 508-947-7224 to sign up. The group will be open to 5 members. 

Registered Nurse Tina McDonald will host a “Mobile Foot Care” services program starting Thursday, Aug. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. Appointments are required. Services will address preventative routine foot and nail care that are both sanitary and convenient. This service will continue every fourth Thursday of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. Appointments are 20 minutes long and must be privately paid by cash, check, Venmo or credit card. Cost is $50. Paint Day with Amy will be held Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. Cost is $20 and that includes supplies. Call the office at 508-947-7224 to sign up.

A ukulele class teaching residents the basics of how to play this instrument will be held Thursday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. No experience necessary. 25 ukuleles will be provided. If you have your own, please bring it and let the office know so more can be invited to join the group. Cost is $5 per person due at sign ups. There will be no refunds. In an effort to get the Writer’s Group back into meeting on a regular schedule, member Cindy Barrett has invited her friend and published author Dorothy Twombly to speak at the next writer’s group session scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6 during the group’s normal hours at 1:30 p.m. Twombly is a published author and equestrian and will help members choose their own topics to write about.
