Food pantry volunteers receive new van, celebrated with pig roast
MIDDLEBORO — A new delivery van is helping the Sacred Heart Food Pantry continue its mission of feeding local families in need, replacing a decade-old vehicle that was beyond repair.
Each week, the new van hauls an average of 2,500 pounds of donated food from local grocery stores, including Hannaford, Trucchi’s, Shaw’s and Cumberland Farms. Graphics on the van give a nod to those four longtime supporters.
On Wednesday, July 30, volunteers got a well-deserved break. Michael King of Wyandotte Farms in Mattapoisett hosted a pig roast in their honor, donating all the food for the event.
“The volunteers from the Sacred Heart Food Pantry are normally handing out food to
neighbors, on Wednesday the tables were turned,” wrote Danielle Bowker of the Sacred Hearts Food Pantry.
Volunteers enjoyed pork, chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans, cornbread and fresh salad, followed by King’s homemade bread pudding. Joyful Scoops rounded out the celebration with tubs of ice cream for a sundae party.
