Shelves filled at Sacred Heart Pantry thanks to kindness of community
MIDDLEBORO — May was a very busy month for the Sacred Heart Food Pantry, with the generosity of the community helping to fill shelves to help people in need.
“The community support has been incredible” said Pantry Director David Cunningham. “The annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp out Hunger Food Drive was conducted on May 11. This project, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, resulted in a donation to the pantry of 4,262 pounds of food.’’
On the following weekend, Good Neighbors of Plymouth County, a local charity group based in Middleboro, held their second annual benefit night at the Elks. The generosity of this group resulted in 1,275 pounds of food and a cash donation of $5,270 being donated to the pantry.
Parishioners from the Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church in downtown Middleboro collected 300 pounds of food in their parish drive. Pantry volunteers worked quickly to sort through all the cans, boxes and packages from these three events, knowing that soon more would be coming.
On Memorial Day weekend, volunteers greeted shoppers at the Carver Shaws to ask that they add a few extra items to their carts for the pantry.
A great number of shoppers dropped off a bag full of various items and a couple of extremely generous people bought an entire cart full of groceries. Others chose to make a cash donation. In total, 4,305 pounds of food and $1,802 were netted over the 3-day drive.
The Sacred Heart Food Pantry is sponsored by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. For information about the pantry, call 508-947-1717, select option 2 or visit svdpmiddleboro.org/pantry.html.
