Craft fairs raise money for causes
MIDDLEBORO – There was no shortage of craft fairs in Middleboro on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Oak Point retirement community in Middleboro and the First Unitarian Universalist Society in Middleboro both hosted craft fairs that day to raise money for a variety of causes.
At the Unitarian Universalist craft fair, residents could purchase everything from quilts to custom illustrations of household pets.
Bet Giddings said that the Unitarian Universalist craft fair was raising money for the church. “Events like this bring non church members in to see what we’re all about,” she said.
Linda Thompson sold handmade quilted items at the Unitarian Universalist craft fair. “I usually see a piece of fabric that I like, and I make something from it,” Thompson said, describing her artistic philosophy.
The church is “very friendly and open,” she added.
At Oak Point, the retirement community’s Social Director Marybeth MacKay said that Oak Point’s craft fair had become an annual tradition.
“We’ve been doing it for over twenty years now,” MacKay explained. Items sold at the craft fair included jewelry, wood working, and cards.
The Oak Point women’s club had a booth at the craft fair and was running a raffle to raise money for charity.
“All the money we make from this goes straight to our charities,” said Jacqui Hart, the Vice President of the women’s club. “This year we’ve given probably about $10,000 that we’ve raised from events.”
The women’s club is “a great group of women,” Hart said. “We meet once a month.”
