Youngsters top ballot with winning ‘I Voted’ stickers
MIDDLEBORO — They may be too young to vote but Middleboro youngsters put their hearts into art to create stickers to celebrate those who do.
This year, the town clerk’s office hosted its first “I Voted’’ sticker contest. Youngsters in three age categories, under 7, 8-12 and 13-18, were invited to submit their best design ideas for I Voted stickers.
The stickers are distributed to voters who cast ballots in Middleboro.
The winning designs were created by Abigail Wykoff, for the 7 and younger category; Gianna Hayward, for 8 to 12 years; and Olivia Miller, for ages 13 to 18.
The winners were selected by members of the Select Board, who praised the winners and the work of all the youngsters who participated.
The young artists were equally pleased with the wins.
“I love art, and I love Middleboro,’’ Abigail said. She said she was “happy and excited’’ to participate.
Gianna got involved because, she said, "I like to draw and create art work. I know voting is important and I watch the news with my parents."
Her winning image depicts the area of Carmel and Plymouth streets.
"I thought I had a really awesome idea to show patriotism and tried my best because winning is super cool,’’ she said.
Olivia said she participated because "I thought it would be cool to see my artwork on a sticker."
When she learned she won, "I felt great and proud.’’
