Veterans saluted at Council on Aging luncheon

Nov 3, 2022

MIDDLEBORO — They represented various branches of the service and a range of ages.

But those treated to a free meal Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Middleboro Council on Aging had a common denominator: They all served their country.

And for that, eight days before Veterans Day, the community said thank you with a luncheon that was free to all veterans.

Council on Aging Executive Director Holly Begley described the luncheon as “a nice way to honor their service.’’

The luncheon began with a flag ceremony that featured symbols from each branch of the service. Veterans at the service were encouraged to stand and salute the flag representing their specific branch of the service as well as the American flag.

And with that, dinner was served.

“I think it’s wonderful,’’ Cold War veteran Dianne Eaton said as she proudly waved an American flag “It’s great that they honor the veterans and have a special day for them.’’

Air Force veteran James MacDonald, an Air Force veteran who served from 1956 to 1968, called the day a special one. “I’m just glad to be here,’’ he said, beaming.

Middleboro Veterans Agent Stephen Adelman said it was “an honor’’ to in turn honor his fellow veterans.

The luncheon also serves as a chance  to “get people out there and get people together,’’ Adelman said.

Ralph Simon, who served in the Navy on the USS Forrestal from 1964 to 1968, said the luncheon served as an important way to serve veterans.

“Because all gave some,’’ he said. “And some gave all.’’
