Two pets killed in Lakeville barn fire
LAKEVILLE — Two family pets, a five-month-old dog and a cat, were killed in a barn fire on County Street near Freetown Street Saturday afternoon Feb. 15.
Lakeville Fire received reports from multiple callers of the fire at about 2:22 p.m., Lakeville Fire Chief Michael O’Brien said.
The barn was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, the chief said. The barn was located about 1,000 feet off County Street near Freetown Street.
County Street was closed to traffic during the fire, with the assistance of Lakeville Police. The Lakeville tanker and three mutual aid tankers hauled 50,000 gallons of water to the fire location.
Mutual aid was provided by Berkley Fire and Rescue, Freetown Fire, Rochester Fire, Acushnet Fire and EMS and Taunton Fire, which assisted with station coverage. The Providence canteen also assisted the firefighters at the scene.
Animal Control Officers David Frates and Ronnie Frates assisted with the animals killed in the fire. A horse was safely rescued from the property and moved to a secure location.
Fire crews spent more than four hours on the scene fighting the blaze. The cause of the fire is undetermined but is not suspicious, O’Brien said.
