Trump, Biden big winners in Middleboro as machines force delays

MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro voters selected Joe Biden and Donald Trump as the Democratic and Republican candidates for president, echoing national results that set the stage for the November match-up.

The results of the March 5 presidential primary election were delayed due to mechanical issues, Town Manager James McGrail said at the March 11 Select Board meeting. This forced ballots to be hand-counted “into the wee hours of Wednesday,’’ McGrail said.

The problems involved issues with the memory card in the machine, he said. Other towns were similarly affected, he said.

The town is working with the vendor to ensure this does not happen again, he said. He thanked town employees for working “tirelessly,’’ he said.

Twenty-seven percent of the town’s 19,896 registered voters – 5,348 – cast ballots. Of those voting, 3,434 took Republican ballots, 1,852 selected from the Democratic slate and 62 chose a Libertarian ballot.

Of Republicans who cast ballots, Trump won big in Middleboro, earning 2,486 votes. Nikki Haley, who has since dropped out of the race, received 817 votes. No other candidate, all of whom have already dropped out, earned more than 25 votes, with 31 voters opting for no preference.

On the Democratic side, Biden received 1,509 votes. One hundred twenty one voters had no preference. Dean Phillips received 92 votes and Marianne Williamson was the choice of 69 voters.

In a close race, Paul Jacques defeated Evan James Francis, 737 to 709 votes, to become Democratic State Committee Man. Kathryn Cunningham topped Estelle Borges, 749 to 639, as Democratic State Committee Woman.

Among Republican voters, Mark Edward Townsend was selected State Committee Man over Mark Swan, 1,716 to 1,056.
