Touch a Truck at Goode School a vehicle for family fun
MIDDLEBORO — Horns blared and sirens screamed at Mary K. Goode Elementary School Saturday, May 6.
But there was no emergency. Instead, area children were trying out a range of equipment, including fire engines, police motorcycles and asphalt vehicles, during the second Touch a Truck event sponsored by the school’s Parent Teacher Association.
Cheyenne Ely, 5, of Lakeville scampered up to the driver’s seat of an oversized truck without hesitation, smiling as she hit the horn. “It’s cool,’’ she said.
Patrick Kent, 2 ½, of Kingston, checked out a State Police vehicle.. “He loves cars and trucks and fire engines,’’ his mother, Alicea Kent, said.
Watching her son Cole Ackerman of Middleboro climb astride a police motorcycle, his mother Heather Ackerman said she enjoyed the chance to experience the activity. “We want to see our town’s events,’’ she said.
Vehicles tend to draw children’s attention, said Cara Riomar of Plymouth as her son Sam Riomar, 2, climbed on a large truck. “They love the sound, the size, the shiny wheels.’’
The community response was excellent, said Stephanie Hewins, Parent Teacher Association president at Goode School. At least 300 families attended in the first hour alone.
The event began at 11 a.m. and the vehicles were quiet for an hour for children who might be sensitive to sound, she said.
The “beautiful day’’ of weather also helped with the success, she said.
In addition to the vehicles to explore, the day included face painting, games and vendors.
Proceeds will help fund school enrichment programs, she said.
